Body of Missing British TV Presenter Dr. Michael Mosley Found on Greek Island
**ATHENS** — The body of Dr. Michael Mosley, the missing British TV presenter and author, was discovered on a Greek island Sunday morning after a days-long search, his family announced.
Mosley went missing on the island of Symi on Wednesday afternoon. His body was found among rocks on a rugged stretch of coast by a boat party that included the local mayor and journalists.
Mosley’s wife, Dr. Clare Bailey Mosley, explained that her husband had taken the wrong route during a hike and collapsed just short of reaching a marina, in a spot where he couldn't easily be seen.
“Michael was an adventurous man, it’s part of what made him so special,” Clare said in a statement. “It’s devastating to have lost Michael, my wonderful, funny, kind, and brilliant husband. We had an incredibly lucky life together. We loved each other very much and were so happy together.”
Mosley, 67, was a well-known figure in Britain for his numerous programs on the BBC, regular television and radio appearances, and his column in the Daily Mail. Internationally, he gained fame with his 2013 book “The Fast Diet,” co-authored with journalist Mimi Spencer, which introduced the popular “5:2 diet.”
In his career, Mosley often pushed his body to extremes to test the effects of various diets and health regimes, including living with tapeworms for six weeks for the BBC documentary “Infested! Living With Parasites.”
Tributes began pouring in even before the body’s identity was confirmed. Co-author Spencer described Mosley as “immediately likeable, genuinely funny, enthusiastic, and very generous with his time.”
Tom Watson, former deputy leader of Britain’s Labour Party, praised Mosley as a hero, crediting him with helping thousands of people, including himself, achieve better health through science-based journalism.
Dr. Saleyha Ahsan, co-host on “Trust Me, I’m A Doctor,” highlighted Mosley’s talent for making science accessible to everyone, calling him a national treasure. Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver also praised Mosley for changing the conversation around health issues, describing him as a “wonderfully sweet, kind, and gentle man.”
Clare Bailey Mosley expressed deep gratitude to the people of Symi for their tireless efforts in searching for her husband, noting that many locals, who had never heard of Michael, worked from dawn till dusk unasked.
Lefteris Papakalodoukas, the island’s mayor, reported that he was on a boat with journalists when they spotted Mosley’s body about 65 feet (20 meters) above the Agia Marina beach. Ilias Tsavaris, a bar manager at the marina, confirmed the sighting after climbing the hillside.
As police officers retrieved Mosley’s body, one officer fell and had to be carried away on a stretcher. Mosley’s body will be taken to the nearby island of Rhodes for an autopsy.
Mosley is survived by his wife and their four children.
