Apple is fully embracing artificial intelligence, unveiling several new AI features and a partnership with ChatGPT creator OpenAI at its Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday afternoon.

This landmark AI partnership is a first for Apple, which has been seen by analysts as slower to adopt AI compared to tech giants like Microsoft and Google.

The partnership will allow Apple's millions of users to access OpenAI's technology, a leading player in artificial intelligence. OpenAI has previously partnered with various tech and publishing companies, including a multibillion-dollar deal with Microsoft.

Apple's digital assistant Siri will integrate OpenAI, enabling users to get help with tasks such as finding recipe ideas, decorating rooms, or composing stories, said Apple software chief Craig Federighi during the conference.

"Imagine creating a custom bedtime story for your six-year-old who loves butterflies and solving riddles," Federighi said. "Just input your initial idea and send it to ChatGPT."

The announcement comes amid a period of rapid AI growth and some notable challenges. Issues such as hallucinations, plagiarism, and incorrect or biased results have plagued chatbots and AI assistants. OpenAI has also faced allegations of copying actor Scarlett Johansson’s voice without her permission.

Apple is also currently involved in an antitrust lawsuit filed by the Justice Department and 15 states, accusing the company of abusing its monopoly power to sideline competitors and retain customers. It's unclear how this new partnership with OpenAI might impact the case.

Shortly after Apple's announcement, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman posted on X (formerly Twitter), "Very happy to be partnering with Apple to integrate ChatGPT into their devices later this year! Think you will really like it."

Apple also introduced Apple Intelligence, its new generative AI software. Apple Intelligence will offer features such as transcription for phone calls, AI photo retouching, and enhanced natural conversation flow with Siri. The software can also summarize notifications, text messages, articles, documents, and open web pages.

Federighi emphasized privacy with the introduction of Private Cloud Compute, a system designed to ensure data security for users.

Apple says these new features will be available later this year.
