The PSOE receives a resounding "no" from Congress to its bill to prohibit pimping

The vast majority of the allies of the Socialist Party in the Congress of Deputies have voted against the initiative. In Sumar, they describe it as "insufficient, incomplete, punitive and electoralist.

Congress has rejected the PSOE's proposed reform of the Penal Code aimed at "prohibiting pimping in all its forms." The initiative was opposed by all the parliamentary allies of the socialists, except for the BNG, which voted in favor, and Podemos, which abstained. Sumar, the government's coalition partner, criticized the proposal as "insufficient, punitive, incomplete, and electoralist." The Popular Party also voted against the measure, despite uncertainty about their stance until the last moment.

On Tuesday morning, socialist sources, acknowledging the difficulty of passing the proposal, stated that it was presented "on principles." Within Sumar, there was consensus that a debate of such importance for feminism requires a broader approach with more effective guarantees. They also felt that the PSOE's proposal did not adequately protect the rights of women engaged in prostitution.

The final vote saw the PSOE, BNG, and Canary Coalition voting in favor, while the Popular Party, Sumar, ERC, EH Bildu, PNV, and Junts per Catalunya voted against, with Vox and Podemos abstaining.

Members of Sumar revealed that the bill sparked an internal debate within the party, which includes both openly abolitionist groups like Izquierda Unida and "pro-rights" factions like the Comuns. They eventually reached a consensus to reject the socialist initiative, finding it unsatisfactory for both sides.

The PSOE had hoped to gain support from the Popular Party, despite the contentious atmosphere of the legislature. This expectation was based on previous support from Alberto Núñez Feijóo for a similar proposal in 2022, when the PSOE sought to criminalize pimping with the backing of the PP.

In response to the setback, the Socialist Party, through spokesperson Andrea Fernández, insisted they would continue "fighting to advance" the prohibition of pimping.

This defeat marks the first setback of the week for the Socialist Party, which will also be defending the reform of the so-called land law on Thursday, a vote that will similarly hinge on the support of the Popular Party. Sumar has already announced they will not support this reform either.
