The Biden administration escalated tensions between Beijing and Washington by adding 37 Chinese entities to a trade restriction list on Thursday. Some were accused of supporting a suspected spy balloon that flew over the United States last year.

Additionally, units of China Electronics Technology Group were included for allegedly seeking American technology to advance China’s quantum technology capabilities, with implications for U.S. national security due to military applications.

Reports indicate that China Electronics Technology Group, a state-owned entity, is a major supplier of military equipment. However, they could not be reached for immediate comment, and the Chinese embassy in Washington did not respond to requests for comment.

These actions demonstrate the Biden administration's determination to penalize Beijing over the spy balloon incident, which sparked political outrage in Washington and led to Secretary of State Antony Blinken canceling a trip to China in February 2023.

The Commerce Department had previously added five companies and one research institute to the entity list for supporting China's military modernization efforts, particularly aerospace programs. China's Foreign Ministry maintained that the balloon was a weather device blown off course, criticizing the U.S. response as excessive.

The entity list, aimed at curbing technology flow to China over military concerns, restricts US suppliers from trading with designated entities.

Furthermore, the Biden administration added several Chinese entities to the list for attempting to acquire American items for drone production for the Chinese military and for shipping controlled items to Russia.
