Benny Gantz has given Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu an ultimatum: present a plan for a post-war order in the Gaza Strip by June 8th, or he will resign from the government. Gantz, a minister in Israel's war cabinet, announced that he and other members of his National Unity party would leave the cabinet if Netanyahu fails to meet the deadline. Netanyahu responded angrily, accusing Gantz of issuing an ultimatum to the prime minister instead of targeting Hamas.
Gantz joined Netanyahu's government as a minister without portfolio and a member of the war cabinet following the unprecedented attack by Hamas and other terrorist groups on October 7. This move was intended to signal unity in the face of crisis. Despite being in opposition, Gantz's National Unity party is currently leading in opinion polls, ahead of Netanyahu's Likud party.
In a recent statement, Gantz criticized the current state of leadership, claiming that crucial decisions needed to secure victory were not being made. He accused a small minority within Netanyahu's right-wing coalition of steering the country towards disaster and allowing personal and political interests to compromise Israeli security.
Gantz called for the establishment of an American-European-Arab-Palestinian government alternative in Gaza, explicitly excluding Hamas and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. He also emphasized
the need for the return of hostages from Gaza, normalization of relations with Saudi Arabia, and a new military service concept for all Israelis. "Prime Minister Netanyahu, I look you in the eyes this evening and say - the choice is in your hands," Gantz declared.
Netanyahu rejected Gantz's demands, stating that they would lead to Israel's defeat, the continued captivity of hostages, the survival of Hamas in power, and the creation of a Palestinian state. Netanyahu maintains that an emergency government is essential to achieving all war goals, including the safe return of hostages.
