Day of employees of publishing houses, printing and book distribution in Ukraine

It falls on the last Saturday of May. The holiday was established in accordance with the Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 563/99 of May 25, 1999. It is a day when the efforts and achievements of all those working in the field of publishing, printing and book distribution are honored. It was created taking into account the significant contribution of workers in this field to the development of science, culture, education and spirituality of the people.

Publishing books requires a considerable amount of knowledge and patience. Printing presses appeared in Ukraine as early as the 15th century, so printing has its own ancient history. A true work of book art was the Ostroh Bible, published in 1581. This book became a kind of canon according to which religious books were published not only in Ukraine, but also in neighboring European countries.

International Day of Missing Children

Since 2002, the International Day of Missing Children has been celebrated worldwide on May 25 at the initiative of the International Center for Tracing Missing and Exploited Children.

On this day, in various countries around the world, events are held to attract public attention and involve concerned citizens in the search for missing children. According to the European Commission, 250,000 children are declared wanted in the EU every year. About 4,000 cases of missing children are registered in Ukraine every year.

International Day of Heroes of the Struggle Against Totalitarianism

This day was initiated by the European Parliament in 2019 and is dedicated to the memory of those who fought against totalitarian regimes, rescued people from camps, and helped avoid deportations and arrests. The date was chosen in honor of Captain Witold Piletsky, who was killed by members of the Communist Party on this very day in 1948.

The purpose of the Day of Heroes of the Struggle Against Totalitarianism is to honor the memory of the opponents of such a regime, who saved people from the camps, helped to avoid deportations and arrests; involving the world community in preventing the possible emergence of a totalitarian regime.

What a religious holiday today

May 25 in the church calendar is the third discovery of the head of Ivan the Forerunner. According to legend, during the iconoclastic persecutions in the 8th century, the head of Ivan the Forerunner was hidden, and at the beginning of the 9th century, it was transported to the city of Komany, near modern Sukhumi. In 842, the head was transferred to Constantinople, and later, during the Fourth Crusade, the Catholic priest Vallon de Sarton found the front part of the head in one of the palaces of Constantinople.

The third discovery took place in 850, when Saint Ignatius, after God's revelation, learned about the place where the head was buried. The silver vessel with the holy head was ceremoniously moved to Tsargorod.

There are many versions regarding the whereabouts of the real head of John the Baptist. Some sources claim that it may be in the monastery of St. Sylvester in Rome, in the Umayyad mosque in Damascus, in Nagorno-Karabakh in Armenia, on Mount Athos, but the most likely location is considered to be the Cathedral of Our Lady of Amiens in France.
