Tony Evans Steps Away from Ministry, Citing Old Sin

The individual who holds the distinction of being the first African American to have both a study Bible and a complete Bible commentary named after him has made a significant declaration: he will adhere to the "biblical standard of repentance and restoration."

Expressing his deep-rooted commitment to the Word of God as the ultimate standard of truth, this individual, in a statement dated June 9 to his congregation at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship, conveyed the necessity of repentance and reconciliation with God when falling short of this standard due to sin. Though not specifying the exact nature of his actions, the individual, Tony Evans, age 74, clarified that they did not involve criminal behavior but rather a failure in exercising righteous judgment. Consequently, he announced his decision to step away from his pastoral responsibilities and embrace a process of healing and restoration, overseen by the church's elders.

Tony Evans, the esteemed founder of The Urban Alternative, a Christian Bible teaching ministry, has served as the leader of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship for over four decades, alongside hosting a globally broadcast radio show, The Alternative with Tony Evans.

The church released an additional statement affirming Evans's announcement, emphasizing the gravity of the decision reached after extensive prayer and deliberation with the church elders. The statement underscored the elders' responsibility to uphold biblical standards and ensure accountability within the church.

Lead associate pastor of fellowship, Bobby Gibson, and the church elders will guide the congregation through this transition, providing clarity on interim leadership arrangements.

Acknowledging the support of his family and the church elders, Evans, who lost his wife, Lois, in 2019 and remarried in November, shared his commitment to undergoing a process of spiritual recovery and healing alongside the congregation. Drawing on his past advocacy for accountability, Evans emphasized the importance of embracing this challenging season with trust in God's guidance.

In his closing remarks, Evans assured the congregation of his enduring love and vowed to navigate this period of uncertainty with faith and humility.
