NZ win big after blowing away Uganda for 40

Southee and Boult picked up five wickets between them to demolish Uganda, as New Zealand completed the small chase in 5.2 overs

New Zealand 41 for 1 (Conway 22*) defeated Uganda 40 (Southee 3-4, Boult 2-7) by nine wickets

Trent Boult and Tim Southee dismantled Uganda with their exceptional bowling, supported by Mitchell Santner and Rachin Ravindra’s left-arm spin, leading to another Ugandan collapse at the T20 World Cup.

Uganda's batting line-up crumbled under the pressure of New Zealand’s quality bowling, getting all out for just 40 in the 19th over. Kenneth Waiswa was the only batter to reach double figures, as Uganda managed only three boundaries throughout their innings and struggled to score against frequent beatings by New Zealand's bowlers.

New Zealand chased down the target in just 5.2 overs, losing only one wicket.

Boult targets the stumps early

Even top-order batters from established teams would have struggled against Boult’s first over. He started with a couple of inswinging yorkers to Ronak Patel, who managed to get off strike on the second ball. Boult’s next two deliveries were swinging and precise, trapping left-hander Simon Ssesazi plumb in front and then cleaning up Robinson Obuya with a delivery that curved in through the gate.

Following Boult’s double-wicket over, which conceded just one run, Southee bowled a maiden, and then Boult delivered another maiden, leaving Uganda's top order often unable to make contact. The pair bowled right through the powerplay, leaving Uganda at 9 for 3, with Southee trapping Alpesh Ramjani in front in his second over.

Spinners and Ferguson wreck Uganda's middle order

Santner, Lockie Ferguson, and Ravindra took over from the pace duo. Santner struck first, drawing an outside edge from Ronak, which was caught by wicketkeeper Devon Conway. Ferguson then bowled Waiswa. Even Uganda's more experienced batters, Riazat Ali Shah and Dinesh Nakrani, struggled to score, and by the end of the 14th over, Uganda were seven down for 27.

Their only small consolation was surpassing their lowest T20 total of 39, which they had recorded against West Indies.

The chase

New Zealand’s pursuit of the small target was straightforward. The only wicket Uganda managed was a touch of luck, with Riazat getting Finn Allen caught down the legside with a full delivery. New Zealand also found it challenging to hit boundaries, managing only two in the first four overs. However, with such a small target, singles and twos sufficed. Conway sealed the win with back-to-back boundaries off Juma Miyagi.
