"It’s going to be a long night, motherf***ers," Grohl shouted as he stormed onto the stage, kicking off a nearly three-hour, 23-song set. The night was a journey through theen band's extensive catalog, with at least one song from each of their 11 albums.
The setlist was a fan's dream, starting with "Monkey Wrench" and ending with "Everlong," including classics like "All My Life" and "Best of You." Manchester was in for a treat with the first-ever live performance of the new Foo Fighters song "Unconditional."
The show featured a stripped-back segment, showcasing a rare performance of "Statues" with Grohl accompanied only by lead guitarist Chris Shiflett and keyboardist Rami Jafee. Grohl then delivered an emotional solo rendition of "Under You," dedicated to a friend. The 55-year-old was visibly moved as fans sang along to this live debut.
One of the most touching moments was the performance of "Aurora," which Grohl noted was "Taylor Hawkins’ favorite Foo Fighters song." He shared, "All we do is tell Taylor stories all day long," underscoring how deeply the drummer is missed by the band and fans alike.
The night was a testament to what the Foo Fighters do best—delivering rock anthems with Grohl leading the charge. Even when his guitar cut out during the show-closer "Everlong," Grohl kept the energy high, running around the stage "like Bono" until the issue was resolved.
The show wasn't without its fun moments, including a band introduction segment with mini covers of "Sabotage" and "Blitzkrieg Bop." Grohl’s charisma shone through, even joking about making the rain go away. Despite the forecasted heavy downpours, only a few light showers occurred, giving some use to the official Foo Fighters ponchos.
Elsewhere in terms of merchandise, if you are heading down to the Foos’ second outing on Saturday you’ll be looking at £70 for a hoodie and £35 for a t-shirt. For food and drink I paid £15 for a pretty good steak burrito that more than saw me through the night and £3.80 for a pint of Pepsi. If you’re on the booze, you’re looking at £7 for a pint or spirit and mixer, with wine just a little pricier at £8.
However you spend your cash this weekend, the money you’ve already forked out on a ticket is already very well spent.
“Do you f***ing love rock ‘n’ roll music?” Grohl asked on more than one occasion. Played like this Dave, there’s nothing better.
