The sentences of the convicts of the February 28 case were lifted



 

The sentences of the sick and elderly detained commanders Fevzi Türkeri, Cevat Özkaynak, Yıldırım Türker, Erol Özkasnak and Çevik Bir, who were tried in the February 28 Case, were lifted.

According to the decision published in the Official Gazette with the signature of President Tayyip ErdoÄŸan; The remaining sentences of the defendants of the February 28 case, Cevat Temel Özkaynak, Ã‡etin DoÄŸan , Çevik Bir, Erol Özkasnak, Fevzi Türkeri, were annulled.

CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, during his visit to President Erdoğan, requested the release of sick prisoners and generals detained on February 28.

What happened?

In the February 28 case of the Supreme Court of Appeals, the verdict given to 14 defendants, including former 2nd Chief of General Staff Çevik Bir, former Gendarmerie General Commander Fevzi Türkeri, former General Staff General Secretary Major General Erol Özkasnak and former 1st Army Commander Çetin DoÄŸan. The life sentence was upheld in 2021.

14 people were arrested and sent to prison within two days.

Çevik Bir was released on August 2, 2022 due to health problems.

Retired lieutenant general Vural Avar died on December 20, 2022 while in prison.

Later, retired lieutenant general Hakkı Kılınç, who had health problems, was released on January 11, 2023, and former general İlhan Kılıç and former major general Kenan Deniz were released on January 26, 2023.

In March 2023, President Tayyip ErdoÄŸan pardoned the remaining sentences of retired general Ahmet Çörekçi, retired lieutenant general Hakkı Kılınç and retired brigadier general İdris Koralp due to their health problems
