Boston’s GM talks Marchand’s health, goalie interference call, 3-1 series deficit
BEDFORD, Mass. – Ahead of the Bruins' upcoming flight back to Florida for Game 5, General Manager Don Sweeney addressed the media on Monday afternoon. With the team trailing 3-1 against the Panthers, Sweeney discussed various topics, including Brad Marchand's condition, the team's performance, and the contentious officiating in the series.
Regarding Brad Marchand's injury status:
Sweeney stated, "Brad skated today and will travel with the team. He remains day-to-day. We hope the team can support him well."
On the unsuccessful challenge for goalie interference during Game 4:
"We refrain from criticizing the officials as it's standard protocol and could result in fines. Instead of focusing on officiating post-game, attention should be directed towards areas where we could have improved to secure victory."
Addressing the lack of discipline for Sam Bennett's hit on Marchand:
"The Department of Player Safety needs to clarify their interpretation. We've thoroughly reviewed the incident and respect their judgment."
Regarding access to officials for media:
"If transparency is desired, officials should be available to explain their decisions, similar to players and coaches."
Facing a series deficit:
"It's disappointing but reminiscent of past playoff scenarios. We need to focus on one game at a time and execute effectively."
Analyzing the team's shot differentials:
"We prioritize quality over quantity in our shots. However, we must capitalize on offensive opportunities and generate more rebounds."
On recent player recalls:
"We've brought in additional players for depth and flexibility, a common practice during
this time of the season."
Before the Bruins departed for Florida, winger Pat Maroon shared his thoughts with reporters, addressing Boston's approach to being down 3-1 in the series and his efforts to ignite momentum in recent games.
Regarding potential retaliation against Bennett for the hit on Marchand:
Maroon expressed, "It's a tough position. People may wonder why I haven't taken action, but I assure you, it's not for lack of trying or desire. I care deeply for my captain and teammates. However, we must move past it and focus on winning."
On frustration with officiating decisions:
"We can't dwell on calls. We had opportunities but didn't capitalize. We need to acknowledge our shortcomings collectively. When leading, we must maintain pressure, not sit back. We need to dictate play and show more urgency."
Regarding overcoming the 3-1 series deficit:
"We must concentrate on the present task as a united group. Our performance in Game 4 showed glimpses, but we need more shots on goal and tighter play. We've been in this position before, and we know the importance of staying focused on the immediate challenge."
