Israel's Foreign Affairs Minister, Israel Katz, participates in a session of the United Nations Security Council held at the U.N. headquarters in New York on March 11th. |
Israel's Foreign Affairs Minister, Israel Katz, has denounced the recent passage of the UN General Assembly resolution on Friday, which called for the UN Security Council to reconsider UN Membership for the Palestinian Authority.
"The absurd decision made today at the UN General Assembly underscores the structural bias of the UN and the reasons why, under the leadership of UN Secretary-General Guterres, it has rendered itself an irrelevant institution," Katz stated, emphasizing, "The message the UN is conveying to our troubled region is that violence pays off."
Katz expressed concern that this decision would further complicate negotiations regarding the release of hostages held in Gaza, providing "a tailwind to Hamas."
He extended gratitude to the countries that did not support the resolution, commending them for "standing on the right side of history and morality."
In contrast, Hamas welcomed the resolution's passing in a statement on Friday, urging "the free countries of the world to intensify their efforts and provide all means of assistance and support to our Palestinian people."
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution, advocating for the UN Security Council to reconsider Palestinian membership in the UN, garnered 143 votes in favor, nine against, and 25 abstentions.
The resolution urges the Security Council to "reconsider the matter favorably" and underscores that the Palestinian Authority is eligible for UN membership, affirming, "the State of Palestine is qualified for membership in the United Nations."
