Heritage , Societal Happy Birthday Mom ! A brief history of Mother's Day in France

Celebrated each year on the last Sunday in May (and thus this year on Sunday, May 26), Mother's Day is an opportunity to honor mothers and express our love and gratitude. But do you know the origins of this celebration and its significance beyond the commercial aspects?

From Antiquity to the Modern Era: Homage to Mothers Through the Centuries

**Greek and Roman Antiquity: Homage to Mother Goddesses**

The concept of celebrating mothers dates back to ancient times when the Greeks and Romans honored mother goddesses like Rhea and Cybele in religious ceremonies. These festivities celebrated fertility and motherhood, recognizing the crucial role of women in society.

**16th Century England: “Mothering Sunday”**

In 16th century England, “Mothering Sunday” emerged as a religious tradition on the fourth Sunday of Lent. This day allowed children to return to their native villages and visit their mothers in church, offering them a “simnel cake” as a token of love and gratitude.

**20th Century: The Official Establishment of Mother's Day**

In 1908, the idea of a dedicated Mother's Day gained traction in the United States, thanks to peace activist Anna Jarvis. She successfully lobbied the American Congress to designate the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day, aiming to honor her own mother and emphasize the importance of maternal roles.

In France, the first official celebration took place in 1906, organized by Prosper Roche to honor mothers of large families. However, it was under the Vichy regime in 1941 that Marshal Pétain officially established the holiday to promote family values and encourage a higher birth rate.

Today, Mother's Day remains a significant symbolic occasion. Beyond gifts and flowers, it strengthens family bonds and highlights the crucial role of mothers in society. This day serves as a reminder that affection and gratitude should be central to family relationships, transcending material considerations.

So, don’t forget to celebrate your mom today by giving her a gift, preparing a special meal, or writing her a heartfelt letter full of love and appreciation.
