Giant fan arena for EURO 2024 in Berlin

As part of the preparations for the 2024 European Football Championship to be held in Germany, a "fan field (fanmeile)" with artificial grass and a giant goalpost is being established on the street in front of the historical Brandenburg Gate in the capital Berlin

Germany is preparing to host tens of thousands of football fans as part of the 2024 European Football Championship (EURO 2024), which will be held between 14 June and 14 July. In the capital Berlin, a giant " fan meile " is being established on 17 June Street, which starts from the historical Brandenburg Gate, passes through Tiergarten Park and extends to Ernst Reuter Square . While artificial turf was laid in the area in front of the historical gate, the "world's largest football goal" was also installed. The giant pole will symbolize the championship and football. Tens of thousands of football fans will be able to watch the important matches of the championship on a giant screen that will be installed on a total of 24 thousand square meters of artificial grass. On the days when matches are not played in the fan arena, large entertainment programs, including open-air cinema and concerts, will be organized. 50 thousand to 100 thousand people will be able to follow matches and other events together at the same time. A section of 17 June Street, on which a fan field has been established, will be closed to all types of vehicle traffic for 3 months. While the fan field is expected to be fully ready on May 26, it was announced that it will cost 1.2 million Euros.

Reaction from environmentalists
Environmentalists reacted to the fan field established in Berlin. The German Association for the Protection of Environment and Nature described the artificial turf laid for the fans as an "ecological disaster". The environmental protection organization stated that artificial turf will cause tons of micro and nanoplastics, and that the waste can reach nature and people's lungs and cause serious harm to health. Organizers stated that artificial grass does not pose a danger, is produced in a way that does not harm nature and living creatures, and is 100 percent recyclable.
It is also considered that the artificial grass laid for the fan field will be used in amateur football fields, nurseries and Tegel prison after the championship

Security measures will be increased.
The police will take intense security measures for the "fan field" in Berlin. Berlin Police Chief Barbara Slowik announced in her statement regarding possible terrorist attacks that there is an "abstract high risk" that has existed for years, but there is currently no indication of a specific attack threat

The area around the fan field, where entrance will be free, will be completely fenced for security reasons and can only be accessed through controlled entrances. Barriers will be placed in areas around the entrances to ensure that no vehicle can enter the crowd.
